The Power of Birds & Bird Song

Since returning to British Columbia to live, I’ve been walking the local forests, marshes, and meadows—finding myself serenaded by an ethereal symphony of birdsong. Warblers. Thrushes. Sparrows and so many others. During those walks, a sense of calm washes over me. I breathe in the forest’s complex aromas and listen to Nature communicating with itself. My muscles relax and my heartbeat slows as I fall into Nature’s rhythm and feel an abiding sense of home

I have lately taken up the activity of birdwatching, purchasing a pair of binoculars and a local field guide that I take with me on every excursion.

As if to cheer me on in the pursuit of my new interest, I ran across several interesting journal articles extolling the benefits of birdsong and birdwatching.

Benefits of Bird Song

A 2018 study by researchers at Kings College London examined the effects of bird song and interactions with nature on peoples’ mental health. The study revealed that bird song not only lowered anxiety and depressions—increasing general wellbeing—but also helped people to concentrate and focus more.

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and the Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf also showed that birdsong reduces anxiety and irrational thoughts:

The Max Planck neuroscientific study investigated the influence of birdsong on mood, paranoia, and cognition. Researchers examined how traffic noise and birdsong affect mood, paranoia, and cognitive functioning by carrying out a randomized online experiment with 295 participants. Participants heard six minutes of either typical traffic noise or birdsong with varying numbers of different traffic sounds or birdsongs. Before and after hearing the sound clips, the participants filled in questionnaires assessing their mental health and performed cognitive tests. 

The Max Planck study suggested that listening to birdsong reduces anxiety and paranoia in healthy participants. Birdsong did not appear to influence depressive states in this experiment. Traffic noise, however, generally worsened depressive states, especially if the audio clip involved many different kinds of traffic sounds. The positive influence of birdsong on mood—already well-documented—was first documented in this study on paranoid states. Researchers explained that this likely represented a subtle indication of an intact natural environment, detracting attention from stressors that could otherwise signal an acute threat; it represented a non-threatening environment. 

Researchers concluded that as little as six minutes of birdsong can significantly reduce stress, lower cortisol levels, and alleviate symptoms of anxiety, depression, and paranoia.

Hammoud et al. argued that the effect of birds was greater than what would be expected by being exposed to green spaces. Arthur Dobrin in Psychology Today provided examples of use of bird song in artificial environments—from airports to washrooms—that increased mood and relieved stress. Dobrin ended his article with the ironies of outdoor sounds in summer: “Ironically, while warm weather brings us outside, it also brings power lawnmowers and leaf blowers. In addition to polluting the air with noxious fumes, the lawn care equipment creates a din that chases many birds away. Recognizing that, on balance, maintaining beautiful lawns is often detrimental to the environment, some municipalities now regulate the decibel level of lawn equipment.” He ended pithily: “Everyone has a right not to be harmed by noisy and noxious lawn mowers and leaf blowers; we all have the right to hear birds sing.”

Benefits of Birdwatching

While the online bird song studies showed no influence on cognitive performance after exposure to birdsong or traffic noise, other research has established that the activity of birdwatching in nature significantly increases cognition.

Neuroscientific evidence from the University of Zurich suggests that the activity of birdwatching offers far more than just relaxation and destressing. Researchers have shown that expert birders possess significant structural differences in their brains compared to novices. Specialized neural pathways permit them to accurately identify even unfamiliar species.

As with the cognitive shifts seen in polyglots or professional pianists, the act of birding appears to fine-tune the brain’s visual and auditory processing centers, turning a casual interest into a powerful exercise in neuroplasticity. Scans have shown that brains of birdwatchers are more dense in areas associated with processes that include working memory, spatial awareness, and object recognition.

Through their ability to distinguish subtle variations in plumage, song, and flight patterns, birdwatchers effectively reshape their cortex to perceive details that others might miss. The researchers showed that this expertise is not an innate talent but a result of prolonged practice.

Birdwatching reshapes the brain in a similar way to learning a language or instrument. Engaging meaningfully with the natural world is a cognitive investment that sharpens the mind for a lifetime.
